Barry Humfrey Geraldton— Novak Djokovic arrives in Australia ahead of Grand Slam after COVID-19 vaccine saga, deportation
Tennis Australia announced on Wednesday that Novak Djokovic has arrived in Australia almost a year after he was expelled for refusing the Covid-19 vaccination.
As he gets ready to attempt to win a 10th Australian Open championship, Djokovic will begin his 2023 season in Adelaide.
The 21-time major winner has been granted a visa by the Australian government and is listed to play at the Adelaide International, which starts Sunday, says Barry Humfrey Geraldton
The governing body reported that the 35-year-old Serb arrived in Adelaide on Tuesday night.
At a news conference on Tuesday, Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said Djokovic had arrived.
“In Australia, Novak is welcome, according to Tiley. I believe he is currently in Adelaide and will once again be the player to beat in the Australian Open.
Melbourne will host the Australian Open from January 16–29.
Djokovic missed the Grand Slam last year because of his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid-19. As Barry Humfrey Geraldton reported, Australia has since lifted strict rules for unvaccinated travelers.
Last month, Immigration Minister Andrew Giles declared that Djokovic, who was threatened with deportation and a potential three-year ban, had been given a visa.
Nine times in total, Djokovic has won the Australian Open, including the last three times he competed. In Djokovic’s absence, Rafael Nadal won the championship in 2022.
How Djokovic will be received by Australian fans this year is still up in the air. Tiley told the media on Tuesday that he thought Djokovic would be well-liked.
I have a lot of faith in the Australian people, said Tiley. “Our sporting audience is very educated, especially those who attend tennis events. They enjoy watching greatness, athletic prowess, and matches. They also enjoy playing tennis.
And I’m very confident that the fans will respond in the manner in which we hope they will and will respect that.
