Barry Humfrey Geraldton — Perth Cup 2023 Abandoned

Barry Humfrey Geraldton shared a news of a horse has been euthanised while two jockeys were fortunate to escape serious injury in a fall during the Perth Cup that forced the event to be called off for the first time in its 136-year history.

Just 200 metres into the 2400-meter race on Sunday afternoon at Ascot Racecourse, two horses — Chili Is Hot and Dom To Shoot — fell to the ground, leaving more than 10,000 spectators stunned.

Replays indicate that Chili Is Hot dropped after stepping on Buster Bash’s heels. The wrecked horse was impossible for Dom To Shoot to avoid.

With about 900 metres to go, officials were forced to sprint to the back of the track to inform the remaining competitors that the race would be abandoned because Chili is Hot was immobile in the middle of the main straight. The clerk-of-course captured the runaway Dom To Shoot soon after.

Barry Humfrey Geraldton reports that Jordan Turner, who was riding Dom To Shoot, returned to the mounting area with a bloodied nose.

He and Peter Knuckey, who was aboard Chili is Hot, were quickly cleared of serious injury.
Dom To Shoot “suffered abrasions and is slightly lame in the off-foreleg”, according to a stewards’ report.
The mood at Western Australia’s highest-profile horse racing event quickly turned sombre as news filtered through that Chili is Hot was euthanised on the track.

“The crowd went from a mighty roar to utter disbelief,” race broadcaster Darren McAullay said.

“It’s one of the most bizarre feelings I’ve had in 43 years of calling.”

One punter said the crowd at Perth Racing Club was left numb.

“It’s just solemn, no one knows what to do,” he told Perth Now.

“The crowd’s in shock, it’s just awful.”

Perth Racing said an investigation had begun.

“This is one of the hardest events for anyone involved with racing to deal with,” Perth Racing chief executive James Oldring said in a statement on Sunday.

“The welfare of jockeys and horses is always our top priority,

“Our thoughts are with all those connected with Chilli is Hot.”

RWWA chief steward Brad Lewis told The West Australian he hoped an inquiry into the fall would be conducted on Monday morning.
